Some people also choose the vegan way because of the consciousness towards their environment. Animal lovers also propagate the vegan lifestyle to enable animals to live a human life. It also reduces the carbon footprint of an individual as it cuts down the carbon footprint associated with rearing cattle for meat production.
However, like every other choice, a vegetarian diet comes with its own set of cons.
- The diet can be deficient in protein.
A balanced diet by definition includes protein in a good quantity. The main source of protein in our diets is from animals, meat, fish, eggs, milk etc. When we choose a vegan diet we have to make inclusions of protein from a variety of vegan options like soya-bean, legumes, beans, quinoa. All of these have to be consumed in an increased quantity to have the required amount of protein since their protein percentage is relatively low.
Supplements are often taken by vegetarian athletes, and other physically active people to compensate for the deficiency of proteins in a vegan meal.
- Needing Iron & Calcium.
The major problem for vegetarian that abstain from milk is that they cannot incorporate the required quantity of iron in their meal. Lack of iron tends to make people anaemic and fatigued.
Calcium is required in great quantities for kids who are growing as well as adults.
Very fewer quantities of these important minerals can be obtained from leafy green vegetables.
